^ On December 12, 2024, the Port Authority of NY & NJ Board authorized incentivizing proper positioning of E-ZPass Tags by introducing a new Mid-Tier toll rate across all vehicles classes with a NY/NJ E-ZPass account effective, July 6, 2025. This new tier (affecting 9% of transactions) is intended for drivers to take advantage of lower E-ZPass rates by ensuring their Tags are mounted properly on the vehicle windshield for accurate reading by the toll collection system at the time of crossing. NY/NJ E-ZPass account customers whose E-ZPass Tags are not properly mounted and not positioned for accurate readings while traveling Port Authority crossings, will be charged a Mid-Tier rate for their tolls. The Mid-Tier rate is higher to cover the incremental cost to process the toll transaction (license plate picture and account verification), however, the Mid-Tier rate is lower than the full toll rate with Tolls by Mail. Please Note: Customer license plate number(s) are required to be correctly registered to an active NY/NJ E-ZPass account in good standing to prevent Tolls by Mail invoices and to ensure either the E-ZPass (Peak/Off-Peak) rate or Mid-Tier rate.
